PUBLIC REALM WORKS – SOUTH FYLDE LINE

Work has started on a series of public realm projects to enhance three stations on the South Fylde Line. The works are linked to the 2012 Open Golf Tournament being held at he prestigious Royal Lytham & St. Annes course and Fylde Borough Council’s Lytham St. Annes 2020 Vision.

The stations involved are Lytham, Ansdell & Fairhaven and St. Annes-on-the-Sea. At Lytham and St. Annes stations the work is being carried out to improve access between the station and town centre and includes better signage and improved sight lines. At Ansdell the work is predominantly for the Open Golf, although there is an element of legacy work as well.

Lytham will see an improved station entrance with the tree canopy being lifted and the area immediately in front of the entrance being redesigned to stop cars parking and blocking the entrance. There will also be better lighting and improved signage. Also included in the project is work to rejuvenate the small park that runs alongside Station Square and to the junction of Westby Street and Ballam Road.

The work at Ansdell & Fairhaven will see the area around the disabled ramp being cleared of weeds and unwanted ground cover plants and then replanted with suitable new species. Other work is on the platform where the existing planted areas will be tidied up and replanted and some new raised beds will be created. Northern Rail and Network Rail are working up plans to extend the platform length to accommodate longer trains during the Open Golf Tournament.

At St. Annes-on-the-Sea the project includes some redesigning of the car park and walk ways to allow better sight lines into the town. There will also be some small scale garden works carried out and some improved signage.

The work at Lytham station is being part funded by a grant from the Designated Line Community Rail Development Fund, which is sponsored by the Department of Transport, Network Rail and the Association of Community Rail Partnerships (ACoRP) and helps provide funding for development of community rail lines that have been designated as part of the Government’s Community Rail Strategy.
